Everyone in the sporting community has felt the impact of COVID-19 and the never-ending stream of restrictions. Many of you athletes haven’t been able to take part in playing the sport that you love for months- maybe even longer!
Fortunately, we are turning a corner and a return to sport is imminent. With this return to sport happening, you will be feeling a mix of emotions- anxiety, nerves, excitement and relief to name a few. It’s so important to take care of your mental state, and develop some coping strategies for when these emotions start to take over and impair your ability to
perform.
Firstly, try not to label emotions as ‘positive’ or ‘negative’, this will result in you avoiding the
negative and seeking out the positive. No emotion is ‘bad’ to feel- it’s when that emotion takes over the concern creeps in. Feel whatever you feel, and understand that it’s not permanent. It WILL go away.
Secondly, go easy on yourself in your return. You have never been in this position before so allow some time to get back into the swing of things. Even being around multiple people may feel daunting right now- and that’s ok.
Thirdly, try a few different coping strategies like meditation, deep breathing and imagery. These can help control emotions when you feel a bit overwhelmed.
Finally, try to look at the positives that lockdown has brought. You might have had more time to spend with family, it could’ve made you miss your sport and teammates or it might have given you a well needed break to prevent burnout. Whatever it was, and no matter how silly it may seem- always take note of the small wins.
Remember that you are back doing what you love. Take a time-out, try to have fun and revel in the opportunity to play your sport again!
